Development
The Louisiana Office of Rural Development advises the Governor on issues of concern to the citizens of rural Louisiana. It works diligently to harness state, federal and private resources and apply best practices from other states to Louisiana through executive or legislative efforts. Its objective is lasting and sustainable growth through improvements in eight critical areas: economic development, education, health care, infrastructure, clean water, agriculture and forestry, workforce development and broadband.

Rural economic development requires local capacity building and focus on the quality of life and economic well-being of people living in rural areas, often relatively isolated and sparsely populated areas. Rural development has traditionally relied almost solely on land-intensive natural resources such as agriculture and forestry. Rural economic development now must focus on the unique strengths of each community, rather than concentrating on a "one size fits all" approach. Each community must also recognize their responsibility for economic success; designing and implementing local development strategies that are independent of and leverage state and federal resources. That said, Federal and state governments must provide rural regions with the necessary tools, financing mechanisms, and digital infrastructure to develop and execute effective development strategies. Clear steps to success in rural economic development include the following:
A local focus on job creation and retention – both through direct and indirect means.
Capacity building – Communities must achieve readiness and execute a plan to achieve specific outcomes, projects, and follow a timeline.
Economic resilience – Economic resilience is the ability of a community’s economy and systems that support the economy to withstand disruption and thrive in the face of change.
Support for entrepreneurial ecosystems – Entrepreneurial ecosystems provide training, networking opportunities, and infrastructure to support local entrepreneurs.
LED remains committed to rural communities and expanding opportunities for the people and businesses based in rural areas of Louisiana.
